A SEASON OF GROWTH, GRATITUDE, AND COMMUNITY: Reflections on the 2025 WESA Softball Essentials Clinic
By Emily
25 March 2025

First and foremost, I want to express my deep gratitude to WESA. The support from the league makes everything we do at the Softball Essentials Clinic possible. From providing space and resources, to encouraging new players to take their first steps onto the field, WESA has been an unwavering partner in growing this community. It’s because of that foundation that this clinic continues to thrive and evolve, year after year.

Running the clinic this season has been such a rewarding experience for all of us. There’s something about watching players, whether they’re picking up a bat for the first time or returning with more confidence, that makes every practice feel like a victory. It’s not just about the progress, but the energy and enthusiasm that each player brings to the field. From tentative swings to powerful hits, from first-time catches to smooth plays—it’s incredible to see that transformation. What truly makes this group special is the eagerness to learn, grow, and, above all, have fun together. That spirit is what drives us forward and makes every season unforgettable. The energy is contagious.

This year felt different without Pat out on the field with us. Life pulled him in another direction this pre-season, and we missed him deeply—not just as a coach, but as a constant presence and heart of the program. Pat and I built this clinic together, and so much of what it is today carries his energy and care.

Even though he couldn’t be there in person, he was with us in spirit every step of the way. We look forward to the day he’s back out there with us, glove in hand.

Thankfully, I wasn’t alone in carrying that legacy forward. Gord—our rock—has been at every single practice since the very beginning. His consistency, encouragement, and quiet leadership have helped shape the heart of this program. I’m also so grateful for the other coaches who contributed their time and knowledge whenever they could - Here's to Gio, Rick, Jordie, Trevor, PJ, Nick & Try. It really does take a team to build a community like this.

To all the returning players—it was so good to see you back. There’s a comfort in familiar faces, in the knowing nods and quick smiles. You bring a depth to the program, showing the newbies what’s possible with a little time, effort, and a whole lot of heart.

WESA SE Clinic 2025

And to the new players—welcome home. You may not have realized it when you stepped on the field for the first time, but you joined more than a clinic. You became part of a family. We’ve got your back, and we’re so glad you’re here. Whether you’re here to compete, connect, or just try something new, there’s a place for you on this field and in this community.

This clinic, and this league, is about so much more than just softball. It’s about growth, connection, and confidence. It’s about creating space where everyone is welcome and supported. And every year, I’m reminded why I keep coming back—because the people make it all worthwhile.

Here’s to another beautiful year on the field. Let’s keep swinging, learning, and laughing—together.

A MESSAGE FROM THE WESA COMMISSION REGARDING THE 2025 GSWS
28 April 2025

Since 2008, WESA has proudly participated in the Gay Softball World Series (GSWS). By participating in iPride, we show our support and solidarity for LGBT+ communities across Canada and the US, standing shoulder to shoulder with our brothers and sisters who are fighting for vibrant, inclusive communities.

That said, there are several issues that the Commission considered in deciding on whether to proceed as usual with the GSWS call for coaches this year and later in the season, the call for player interest.

First, the issue of sending teams to GSWS given the current political climate is a nuanced one.  On the one hand, an appropriate response may seem to be to boycott travel and withdraw participation to show our displeasure with what's happening in the US right now.  On the other hand, our LGBT+ brothers and sisters in Houston point out that for those same reasons, now more than ever is the time to stand up, be visible, and show our strength and support.

Second, both positions - and the myriad variations between - are valid points of view and with 300 members (296 to be exact) WESA is not going to be able to represent them all. It's for this reason that our forebears put a bylaw in place prohibiting WESA from making political associations.  So, as an organization, we don't express support for groups other than our membership and the local community charities we fundraise for.  We don't participate in boycotts, demonstrations, petitions, etc. or engage in or support partisan activities to influence voting behaviour or politics at any level.

Third, it's also important to remember that no WESA funds directly finance sending players or teams to GSWS.  This has been a long-standing Commission policy. Players fundraise or self-fund everything from their flights and accommodation to the tournament registration and insurance fees.  Teams are only sent if players and coaches want to go.

WESA absolutely does encourage members to act in whatever way they feel makes the most impact. When we send out a call for GSWS coaches, or expression of player interest, the Commission is ensuring our members have not only the access to opportunity and ability to participate but also have the freedom of choice to withhold their participation if they wish.

We encourage members to share thoughts, questions, and comments with the WESA Commission by emailing Commission@WESA.net.

WESA SCOREKEEPING: league learns from new online clinic
25 April 2025

Earlier this month the league hosted a pilot member clinic on learning how to keep score of a WESA game.  The content focused on both, the basics for Softball Essentials members and more experienced members ready to begin volunteering as an Official Scorekeeper at league games.  Clinic Lead, Nate A. put together a very comprehensive presentation with the collaboration of Dan R. and Emily D.  After feedback from participants, we are finalizing the clinic materials and hope to have it ready online for member access in the near future.  Read more.

REMINDERS FOR THE SEASON

As we have now started our 47th Season, here is a friendly series of reminders to refresh everyone on.

SOBRIETY

A friendly reminder that everyone must be sober to play! Keeping our games & dugouts free of alcohol & inebriating substances promotes a safe environment, is an insurance requirement,& promotes inclusion of all members of our community. Please don’t put your coaches in the awkward position of having to bench you.

PORTAPOTTY

We will—again—have dedicated portable toilets installed at Strathcona Park at the Junction Public House / PumpJack NW Diamond, and at the Celebrities Nightclub CTR Diamond. The Fountainhead Pub SW Diamond has direct access to the public washrooms at the Park Caretaker’s building. All assigned field set-up and take-down teams will have the responsibility of respectively unlocking & locking up the toilets with a key provided for in the diamond’s equipment bin. Please do not relieve yourselves in the bushes around the diamonds or in the community gardens! Reminder that there are public washrooms at the Park Caretaker’s building. Please let’s continue being a good & respectful neighbour everywhere and in particular, the Strathcona Community!

WASTE

You can help! We can all do it together! Please let’s minimize our waste @ Strathcona Park! Please always take your trash & recyclables with you out of the park to be properly disposed of! It is up to us to have our own WESA trash solution.

WEATHER

Games are never cancelled because of rain alone. Cancellation rulings are made on a game-by-game basis (with as much notice as possible) due to unsafe field conditions because of inclement weather. Please check for updates at WESA.net at the ‘Field Conditions’ section at the bottom of the homepage. Also, teams will be notified on TeamLinkt of game cancellations (if your notifications are enabled).

VAN311

See issues with something at Strathcona Park or other City of Vancouver services? Potholes in the ground? Park sprinkler system going off? Public Washroom matters? Garbage Bins? Anything that may need the City’s attention, please log/submit a request to the VAN311 app (which is available on iOS & Android and compatible with all common web browsers). SEE something? DO something!

EQUIPMENT

If you notice something about WESA equipment/supplies/First Aid materials that need attention, please email Equipment@WESA.net.

Your continued understanding, cooperation & participation are always appreciated. Thank you!

If you have any questions and comments, please email Commission@WESA.net anytime. Thank you!

WESA SPONSOR JERSEYS - A CONNECTION TO OUR COMMUNITY
22 March 2025

Thursday, April 24th, marks the Jersey Pickup Party at Junction Public House—a truly meaningful event and one of the highlights of our season. It’s not just a chance to get your jersey; it’s the first time all WESA teams will gather together in one place, a powerful symbol of the unity and energy that will define our historic 47th season.

Our sponsor jerseys hold a deep significance. They are not just apparel; they represent the bond we share with our community. These jerseys connect us to our neighbours, our friends, and to the businesses that have supported us through the years and continue to do so. From the The Shaggy Horse, Burly Barber, The Castle Pub, Vogue Painting and Pumpjack, to Denman Station, Stonehouse Fine Renovations, The Royal Hotel, Doll & Pennys, Morris Law, Dahl Connors, and so many others—each sponsor is an integral part of our shared history and future.

This season, let’s wear our jerseys with pride, not just as a team uniform, but as a symbol of our commitment to one another and the community that stands behind us. As you take to the field, remember: every jersey is a representation of the incredible support that makes WESA so much more than just a league—it’s a family, a legacy, and a community. Let’s celebrate that connection every time we step out to play.

MONTHLY SOFTBALL SOCIALS ARE A HIT
22 March 2025

WESA has long been known for its vibrant social scene, and our esteemed Diamond Sponsors have always played a key role in making that happen. When we think of a WESA event, we envision the lively BBQs and gatherings at the Junction Public House, the energetic dance floor filled with WESA jerseys at Pumpjack Pub, or the memorable Pageant extravaganza at Celebrities Nightclub. It’s equally common to see the Fountainhead Pub hosting softball teams enjoying a well-deserved break together.

This season, the Fountainhead Pub has raised the bar by hosting monthly WESA Softball Social nights, and the turnout has been fantastic. Just last week, Special Events Commissioner Rafe L. brought an extra element of fun with a WESA trivia game during the Social.

As an added bonus, the Fountainhead is hosting The Feud on March 24, 31 and April 7, 14 featuring members of WESA and OFK in a friendly competition.

Looking ahead, we’re excited to invite you to April’s social, which will take place on Spring Ice Breaker Sunday, following the games. We hope to see you there for another unforgettable evening!  Read more.

CANADA-WIDE PRIDE SOFTBALL SERIES?
21 March 2025
Just over a year ago, WESA joined other iPride Softball leagues in a conversation about how we can collaborate on mutual goals including competition and sponsorship opportunities in Canada. We are happy to report that we have found places in which to collaborate including what we hope turns into a rotating Canada Series tournament where we can offer up the membership with opportunities to compete within Canada, maybe as early as 2026. Our ideas, while in their infancy, have lit a fire under us on the WESA committee (Tommy J, Peter H, Seán HC) and we would love to get more input from the members. Please let us know your thoughts on this topic by emailing commissioner (at) wesa.net. For more visit the WESA Committee page
