WESA Coach Squad

Who we are

The WESA Coach Squad is a group of members who step up to help shape the experience of our league—on and off the field.

They’re teammates who choose to:

  • Support players and manage teams
  • Run clinics, scrimmages, and learning moments
  • Help keep the league organized and running smoothly
  • Champion Sportsmanship, Inclusion, and Pride

At its core, the Coach Squad is about people helping people—building a league where everyone feels they belong.

What it means to be part of the Coach Squad

Coach Squad members aren’t expected to be perfect—they’re expected to show up with care, consistency, and a willingness to grow.

They:

  • Stay positive and supportive
  • Commit to learning and improving
  • Understand the game (including scorekeeping and rules)
  • Follow WESA’s Code of Conduct and leadership expectations
  • Respect the history and traditions of the league
  • Support and mentor other members
  • Encourage others to get involved

Getting Started

There’s no single path into coaching—just a first step.

You might:

  • Volunteer during the season or pre-season
  • Learn the game through scorekeeping and rules
  • Help out at clinics, events, or with equipment
  • Join a committee or support league initiatives

Many coaches start simply by saying: “I’m interested.”

Team Management in WESA

Each team is supported by a Coaching Pair:

  • Team Manager (Head Coach)
  • 2nd Coach

Together, they:

  • Lead the team
  • Support players
  • Create a positive and inclusive team environment

While the Team Manager sets direction, the Coaching Pair works together to share responsibility, support one another, and build a strong team culture.

We also encourage:

  • New members to step into coaching roles
  • Experienced coaches to mentor others
  • Additional Assistant Coaches to be part of the learning journey

Why it matters

Many WESA players are new to team sports.

The Coach Squad helps ensure that:

  • Every player feels welcome
  • Every team has support
  • The game stays fun, fair, and inclusive

Coaches carry forward the spirit of WESA—and help build what comes next.

Because WESA is, and always has been:   Team Built.

Ready to take the next step? Here’s how coaching grows in WESA:

WESA Coaching Journey

Six Milestones. One Community.  Coaching in WESA is something you grow into.

These milestones reflect real moments—on and off the field—where members step into leadership, build confidence, and help others feel where they belong.

1. Step In

“I’m getting involved.”

  • Volunteer, help out, or support your team
  • Learn the basics of WESA culture and expectations
  • Attend a clinic or simply start showing up

Every coach begins here

2. Support a Team

“I’m part of the coaching group.”

  • Take on an Assistant Coach role
  • Help run drills, manage games, and support players
  • Gain experience across a full season

This is where confidence starts to build

3. Support Fair Play

“I understand how the game works in WESA.”

  • Learn how player assessments and ratings are applied
  • Understand how divisions are structured for inclusion and safety
  • Make decisions that support fairness and balanced play

Fair play is built by informed coaches

 4. Lead Moments

“I’m leading players and situations.”

  • Take ownership of parts of the team
  • Lead drills, lineups, or in-game decisions
  • Begin shaping team culture and experience

Leadership starts in moments

5. Run the Team

“I help lead the team.”

  • Step into a 2nd Coach or Team Manager role
  • Share responsibility for team operations and decisions
  • Build a positive, inclusive team environment

This is where leadership becomes consistent

 6. Grow Others

“I help develop coaches and community.”

  • Mentor new coaches and Assistant Coaches
  • Lead clinics or support Coach Squad development
  • Give back to the league and strengthen the community

Great coaches grow more than teams—they grow people

How Clinics Fit In

WESA clinics support every stage of this journey—but they are just one part of how coaches grow.

  • Foundations → supports Step In
  • Leadership & Team Building → supports Lead Moments
  • Team Management → supports Run the Team
  • Coaching the Coach → supports Grow Others
  • Scorekeeping → supports Support Fair Play

SPORTSMANSHIP.  INCLUSION.  PRIDE.  We are WESA!

PAST COACH SQUAD EVENTS

Coaches Retreats
WESA's Coaches got together with the WESA Commission to learn from each other and plan ahead on issues of Team Management and improving communicating our expectations.

The Autumn Mini-Retreats  were focused on discussing ways to improve the Coaching experience and that of the Members.  There were three Retreats in November of each 2022, 2023, and 2024.  What came out of those instensive meetings was inspirational and a reminder that WESA matters a great deal to many in our community.
